Handling vocal duties will be by Steffen Kummerer of OBSCURA and Charles Elliott of ABYSMAL DAWN/BEREFT who are both greatly influenced by Chuck. ALBUM REVIEW: BEREFT

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Leichenhaus (The End Records)

I am fairly certain that about 70% of my reviews this year have been from super-groups. Some of them were in face super and some were okay. Some were not. Tossing their hat in the ring like The Avengers is BEREFT who’s members certainly live up to the superlatives part, at least on paper. Sacha Dunable (INTRONAUT/GRAVITON), Derek Donley (NATION SUNDAY LAW/GRAVITON), Charles Elliott (ABYSMAL DAWN) and Derek Rydquist (ex-THE FACELESS) have come together to make a unique concept record to say the least. This impactful, experimental Los Angeles-based doom project is all about two different ancient death rituals. It turns out the music is as heavy as the subject matter.

With sounds rising from the hum of guitars and amps to the roaring first droning notes of “Corpse Flower”, this album is going to be a different listening experience to be sure. Feedback flows in like a police siren while harsh, slow riffs mete out their punishment. Donley’s powerful drumming call to mind the funerary rites of a lost world and he is more subtle and sneak than you average skins masher today. The opening dirge gives way to second track “The Mentality of the Inanimate”. There are some otherworldly deep growls from Elliott who handles most of the lead vocals on the album with strong contributions from the rest of the band. The BLACK SABBATH influence is apparent, but there are some other little twists and turns in the music as well. “Withered Efflorescence” continues the theme of grave matters and dire music to match. There isn’t much variation from song to song, but I think that was the purpose of the album actually. Patience is the key for this band. On this cut there are some cool gang vocals with different styled voices (Dunable and Rydquist?) that really add to the track. Rydquist is solid as the bassist as well. There are some interesting guitar motifs that come in and out of the track too. These part extend these six and seven minutes songs into epic feeling songs. “The Coldest Orchestra” has some psychedelic sounds in the opening before returning to the harshness and sludge of the other tracks. This track has a bit of a Buzz Osbourne of THE MELVINS quality to it that I rather enjoyed. “A Cruel Mirage” is full of weirdness and just gnarly low vocals. “Ethereal Dispersal” is the most interesting track on the album in that it breaks up the monotony a bit with some interesting acoustic guitars. It still has a heft to it and some cool backing drone/delay guitars as well. Then it shifts NEUROSIS style into more dynamic crushing riffs and slow waves of beats. The closing cut,  0“…And You are But a Thought” is pretty trippy too. If you are not into doom, sludge and more out-of-the-box type albums, this is likely not music you will run too. On the other hand, I think loyal fans of the sub-genre will find a lot of cool sounds and songs to latch on to.

BEREFT: Pretty good for a super-group.

BEREFT Is The New Shit

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

As you can tell by the picture above, BEREFT carries some heavyweight members. Featuring Derek Rydquist (ex-The Faceless), Sacha Dunable (Intronaut), Charles Elliott (Abysmal Dawn) and Derek Donley (Graviton), BEREFT will immediately get labeled as a super group. They are mighty and evil doom with tons of different vocal approaches. It’s slow and depressing while still having some progressive moments that pay tribute to the other bands these guys are in.

It’s an incredible display of doom and I’m 100% sold on the power and depth in this music. Check out their first song by visiting their Facebook page and clicking like. Do it…. NOW!

SACHA DUNABLE OF INTRONAUT: THE METAL ARMY INTERVIEW

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Metal Army caught up with Sacha Dunable of INTRONAUT while the band was on tour as direct support for ANIMALS AS LEADERS. We chatted with Sacha about life on the road, writing new songs, indispensable gear, his various side projects and other topics.

Live photos used with permission by Danny Graf 2011

INTRONAUT spent their summer opening for ANIMALS AS LEADERS.

MAA: How is the tour going so far?

SD: The tour is going great. All the shows have been packed with lots of enthusiastic kids, all the bands are great. So we couldn’t be happier.

MAA: I have seen you several times since Valley of Smoke has came out and every show has its own unique vibe. Is that predetermined or spontaneous?

SD: Yeah, it’s usually predetermined especially on these support tours you’re working with a pretty strict time restriction and so it’s always a pretty well rehearsed set. We do the same thing pretty much every night, but yeah I mean the last couple times we’ve been through here it’s been different so we’ve had different time restrictions so sometimes we’ve been able to, kinda let loose and play more songs. Play some of our more adventurous songs just because were a little more relaxed.

MAA: Valley of Smoke is almost a year old. Looking back on it now did you accomplish everything on it you hoped to ?

SD: Yeah, I think so. I mean at this point we are already starting to write new riffs and stuff. When that happens you get excited about the new stuff and automatically the last record just doesn’t really excite you as much anymore, but I still think it was our best record up until then and definitely a good progression for us. I still love the record I’m really proud of it, but I’m just already kinda getting antsy to work on new stuff.

MAA: Do you have one piece of gear for the road that you can’t live without?

SD: I don’t know. I guess… what I would need? I would need a delay pedal. Other than that, you can just give me any kind of crappy guitar or gear and I can make it work. I wouldn’t be happy about it, but I could make it work.

Sacha's side project GRAVITON saw the release of Massless this spring on Translation Loss Records.

MAA: Would you to talk about the GRAVITON record?

SD: Yeah, it’s just a record that I do with my two friends Derek (Donely) and Darin (Tombascio), who have their own band called NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW, which actually is no more because one of the guys moved away. Yeah, I mean, they’re just old friends and have a home studio, the drummer Derek does and so we would just get together. I mean this is what I do, I just make music when I’m at home and we’re not touring or whatever. We did a lot of it while INTRONAUT was writing and recording Valley of Smoke, just whenever I wasn’t doing that, we would just be in there cranking shit out. It took us a year to finish, but we’re pretty happy with it. I’m not ashamed of it or anything. It was a fun record to make and obviously we were doing it ourselves so there’s things that if I could go back and change a couple of things, I definitely would. It was a super causal thing. The fact that Translation Loss even put it out was kind of unexpected. We weren’t even expecting that, it was supposed be just be a pretty casual thing. But that band is pretty much done now. I mean we might do something, with technology nowadays you can make anything happen with people living all over the country, or the world. I actually have a new project going with Derek from that band on drums along with Charles Elliot from ABYSMAL DAWN, Derek (Rydquist) the now former singer of THE FACELESS doing a total slow doom metal thing. We’re still working on a name for the band, but we finished the record and that should be coming out pretty soon I think too.

INTRONAUT. Not pictured: Dave Timnick, Katy Perry fan.

MAA: What kind of music do you listen to on the road? Anything out of the ordinary?

SD: What have we been listening too? Dave (Timnick) has been doing a lot of the driving on this tour and Dave s to just flip through the radio. That’s what he does for five hours straight. He’ll just flip through the radio, stop on a song and sing along to it. That’s just how he rolls, so there’s been a lot of that. The last actual record I think we listened to was, well, the last record that anybodies ever heard of would probably be, THE FLAMING LIPS covering Dark Side of the Moon, that record. I think Dave got annoyed with it after two songs and put the radio back on. We’ve heard a lot of KATY PERRY on the radio, nationwide.

MAA: Well, at least she’s visually pleasing!

SD: Yeah, visually pleasing. Actually it’s visually pleasing watching Dave sing those songs! (Laughs)

MAA: After this tour wraps up what else does INTRONAUT have on tap for the rest of 2011?

SD: We’re going back to Europe in October and then maybe some more U.S. touring after that. Just the whole waiting to hear about stuff thing. If we don’t do another U.S. tour this year, which I hope doesn’t happen, but if that’s the case we’ll probably start working on some new material, slowly but surely.

ORIGIN AND HATE ETERNAL WILL LIQUIFY YOUR BRAIN LIVE!

Monday, August 1st, 2011

We live in a great time for complex and heavy music. There are no shortage of bands both old and new that are churning out genre defining albums and new music at an outstanding clip. Even better when these bands can deliver the goods on an album and live and not only recreate those impossible structures and sounds, but really move this style of music forward. This gives new and up and coming bands something to aspire to. ORIGIN and HATE ETERNAL have been setting the bar higher and on their respective new albums, moved it even more so away from its previous perch. Tonight’s show at The Worcester Palladium (upstairs on the more intimate stage) would be a night of impressive technical wizardry and great performances galore.

Make sure you check out ABYSMAL DAWN's latest album.

Local opener BLACK TRIP and up and comer ABYSMAL DAWN were first up tonight. BLACK TRIP plays thrash and death influenced metal and are led by brutal vocalist/guitarist Gennaro Ammendola. They are definitely gaining in stature and respect in the scene here and will have an new EP out soon. ABYSMAL DAWN is on the rise of late with the release of their new album earlier this year Leveling the Plane of Existence (Relapse). With their own brand of tech, prog and death influences in tow the band was on point as you would expect. They played a short set of mostly new songs on this night. “Perpetual Dormancy” was their best song of the bunch. They seemed to rise the occasion of this enormous bill and put on a fine show, earning a lot of new fans.

True.

In the middle slot in the lineup was good old VITAL REMAINS from nearby Providence, RI. Since Worcester is pretty close to their hometown this was practically home turf and the crowd reacted as such for the veterans. They played a set almost worthy of a headline band and it showed. From the first strains of “Where is Your God Now” the band was on fire and the fans were slamming and crowd surfing like mad. Front man Steve Willy killed with his performance, vocal strength and outstanding stage presence. As always mainstay Tony Lazarro was excellent with his iconic custom guitar, “The Crucifire”. Jamming out on songs like “Icons of Evil”, “Infidels” and “Hammer Down The Nails”, they were so tight and excellent considering this is a band with a lot of turnover in the lineup. Closing out with the epic “Dechristianize” they figuratively brought the house down.

Hands down one of 2011's best albums so far....

Next it was time for ORIGIN. I love their new album Entity (Nuclear Blast), but am a real sucker for their older work too. I knew I was going to miss departed vocalist James Lee going forward, but there was no use being a crybaby over it. I’d actually seen Jason Keyser before (SKINKLESS) and I knew he was up to the task at hand. As much as I have loved seeing them open for every other band over the years I was excited to hear a full length set from the band. And they did not disappoint! Just opening up a total can of whoop ass they started things off with “Expulsion of Fury”. You could tell just from the first few minutes of the song that this is a grown up and even more improved band than you could imagine. Of course in response to all this killer music the mosh pit opened up the biggest it had all night and looked deadly painful. Keyser just killed the vocals perfectly and has great stage presence to boot. The band sound phenomenally tight and brutal as you’d expect. “Purgatory” was next with insane drumming from John Longstreth as always. His fluid double-kick work and inhuman amount of stamina still boggles the mind. Of course Paul Ryan and Mike Flores decimate the strings of their instruments playing ridiculously fast yet, ultra controlled parts that never lack character or lose the song. “Conceiving Death” is one of the more old-school death metal sounding songs of the band and it was totally sick. Ryan just makes it look so easy on the guitar it is really not fair. Keyser’s mid-song high-range screams were a throwback to his previous work and sounded great. Flores of course is no slouch either as one of the leading lights of the genre at what he does, maul the shit out of bass guitars and ears.

Blasts of grinding technical goodness like the epic “Wrath of Vishnu”, “Vomit You Out” and “Starring From The Abyss” just lay down the gauntlet to every other band out there. It is not about how many notes you cram in a measure or what kind of blast beats you play, but how well you write songs using these skills. ORIGIN does this as natural as breathing. With absolutely no let up whatsoever they tore through the rest of the set with surgical skill on tracks like “Finite” and “The Aftermath”. Closing out with the sonic one two punch of “Antithesis” and my favorite “Portal” they had put on one of the single best performances of the year by any band. Truly flawless and again, I wonder if there is a better band live today than these guys. Whoa.

Set List:

Expulsion of Fury
Purgatory
Conceiving Death
Evolution of Extinction
Wrath of Vishnu
Vomit You Out
Implosion of Eternity
Staring from the Abyss
Finite
Saligia
Swarm
The Aftermath
Antithesis
Portal

Three maestros and servants of darkness.

After a mind blowing set by ORIGIN I kind of feared for a let down of sorts. Not because of anything to do with HATE ETERNAL at all though. I just thought the penultimate act would be impossible to follow. Still, unbowed and coming out to a heroes welcome the throng of worshipers jammed the front of the stage waiting for all hell to break lose. Opening with “Rebirth” the band sounded as good as ever. They were not about to let the younger upstarts upstage them tonight either. Although Eric Rutan made his name playing with MORBID ANGEL and RIPPING CORPSE and he is highly sought after as a producer, he came into his own when he became the leader of his own band. Tonight was further proof of Rutan’s guitar mastery and showmanship. Heavy, fast, and brutal as all get out “Rebirth” is a great show starter. “The Eternal Ruler” followed next and was so technical and sick sounding! Not only is Rutan a wizard at rhythm guitar, a terrific lead player, but also his guttural growls have never sounded so good. Drummer Jade Simonetto is made of pure professionalism and style behind the kit. The drummer’s role in death metal cannot be understated, especially in a power trio and Jade is a beast to be sure. His lighting fast footwork and trigger laden sound cuts through the waves of heavy guitar and his extra off-time cymbal hits call to mind the early work of Dave Lombardo among others. “Thorns of Acacia” off of the recent album is just killer sounding in a live setting. The blastbeats, double kick drumming and the amount of precision diamond cutter riffs are amazing. Rutan again growls his way to victory. Building up a deep set drawing from the bands’ entire career they played songs like “Behold Judas”, “Lake Ablaze” and the super heavy “Bringer of Storms”. Songs from Phoenix Amongst the Ashes and Fury and Flames highlight the late set cuts and prove to be some of the most popular tracks heard on the night. Rutan’s right hand picking defies explanation sometimes when it comes to live performance and bassist JJ Hrubovcak keeps up with him not for note. One of my personal favorite live songs is “Tombeau” with its amazing axe work, including on of Rutan’s best solos ever. Finishing up with a formidable one-two punch of “I, Monarch” and “King of Kings” they brought the night to a triumphant close.

Set list:

Rebirth
The Eternal Ruler
Thorns of Acacia
Behold Judas
Lake Ablaze
Bringer of Storms
Haunting Abound
Art of Redemption
Phoenix Amongst the Ashes
Tombeau (Le Tombeau de la Fuerer et las Flammes)
I, Monarch
King of All Kings
